Experienced staff attorneys supervise the
students both in court and out. Through weekly clinic seminar
classes, LSIC attorneys instruct students on client counseling and
interviewing, litigation techniques, negotiation and conciliation,
procedure, and relevant statutes and policies. While students
take on all of the tasks associated with representing a client, LSIC
staff attorneys provide guidance and feedback as students proceed
through each phase of their cases. If you want to learn the
essentials of trial advocacy while providing much needed legal services
to members of our community, LSIC may be the clinic for you.
Depending on their law school, students enroll in
either the criminal or civil division of LSIC. Details of
enrollment vary from school to school, but all students must be
eligible for certification under the D.C. student practice rule in
order to participate in either division. For more information on
your school’s clinical opportunities through LSIC, click on the
appropriate link below.
Eligibility for certification under the D.C. student practice rule
requires (1) successful completion of 41 credits, including Evidence,
Civil Procedure, and Criminal Procedure (or a substantially similar
course) prior to the beginning of clinic classes; and (2) clearance by
the Bar Character Committee prior to the beginning of clinic classes.
In order to obtain a character clearance, admitted students must
respond to a series of questions (see below) that appear on the student
bar application. Students with questions regarding the certification
requirements should contact the faculty member or administrator in
charge of their law school’s clinical program, or the Executive
Director of LSIC, Ann Marie Hay. |
