D.C. LAW STUDENTS IN COURT PROGRAM, INC. HONORS SERVICE THROUGH LAW AND EDUCATION

Georgetown Law Professor John Copacino and McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP are to be honored at D.C. Law Students In Court Program’s 40th Anniversary Celebration and 10th Annual Lever Awards Dinner for their contributions to the community through education and legal services.

Washington, DC, July 2008

D.C. Law Students In Court (LSIC), one of the District’s largest providers of legal services to low-income residents and a unique clinical legal education program for third year law students from American, Catholic, George Washington, Georgetown and Howard universities,  will honor Professor John Copacino and McKenna, Long & Aldridge at its 40th Anniversary Celebration and 10th Annual Lever Awards Dinner on Friday, October 3, 2008 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20004. There will be a special film screening celebrating 40 years of LSIC, called  “A Little Justice Goes A Long Way” presented by Amicus Media.

Professor John Copacino has built a reputation as one of the finest legal educators and most dedicated members of the law community at Georgetown University Law Center since 1987. As the director of Georgetown University Law Center’s Criminal Justice Clinic and the E. Barrett Prettyman Program, he works to educate students in criminal defense work as well as clinical education. Among the many fine attorneys and teachers the Prettyman Program has produced are LSIC’s Moses Cook, a LSIC Criminal Division Supervisor, and Mary Kennedy, former Lever Honoree. Also, Professor Copacino’s work in the Criminal Practice Institute, the Neglect and Delinquency Institute, and the Association of American Law Schools has helped shape his reputation as one of the most well-respected and zealous teachers and mentors in the practice of law, as well as a committed member of the D.C. legal community. A long-time friend and supporter of LSIC, John Copacino is certainly an example of outstanding commitment to service through the study of law. “For as long as I’ve known him, John Copacino has always gone out of his way to make time for clients and students alike.  He is a skilled and tireless advocate with a mastery of the law and has that rare gift of persuasion,” says Moses A. Cook, Supervising Attorney in the Criminal Division at LSIC.

A highly successful law firm operating out of Washington, D.C. since 1939, McKenna, Long & Aldridge has been dedicated to matters ranging from administrative and regulatory law to litigation and public policy, with the mission of providing the highest quality of legal assistance in the intersection of business and government. Throughout its longstanding relationship with the LSIC, it has helped shape the community with its support of the organization.  It has contributed over $50,000 to LSIC; printed the Civil Division orientation manuals for nearly 10 years; hosted alumni receptions throughout the 1990s; provided meeting space for committee meetings; and accepted case referrals. Most recently, the firm and LSIC have set up a program for the Criminal Division to train and mentor the firm’s attorneys taking pro bono criminal cases. Mary Brittingham, LSIC’s executive director, commented, “We have been so fortunate to have received McKenna, Long & Aldridge’s support over the years. We are thrilled to be able to honor them for their long-standing support.”
